Material requirements of medical non-woven masks

  • Release on:2020-06-19
1. Commonly used basic raw materials and characteristics

At present, the basic material of commonly used mask fabrics(Cloth Face Mask Manufacturer) is polypropylene masterbatch, which has the advantages of low density and easy photodegradation. After the polypropylene nonwoven fabric reaches a certain length of use, the macromolecular chain can be photodegraded and broken. It is suitable for disposable mask materials and can reduce environmental pollution. Polyester fiber has the advantages of high strength and good light resistance. Its high-curled hollow short fiber can be used for interlayer melt-blown, improve the dust holding capacity of the mask, and reduce the filtering resistance of the mask. In addition, the modified basic raw materials can also improve the mask protection.

One method is to use modified PP or blend PP with functional masterbatch for spinning. For example, using microcapsule technology, the microcapsules with the degrading agent as the core material are evenly attached to the surface of the fiber, which is used to prepare the degradable nonwoven fabric. There is also a controllable degradation agent or nano-scale photosensitive material powder added to PP polymer for blending melt-blown spinning, and the produced melt-blown cloth has controllable photo-biological degradability. Antibacterial agent (general content is 5%~20%) can also be mixed into the spinning masterbatch. After blending and spinning, antibacterial nonwoven fabric can be prepared.

2. Degradable fiber raw materials

With the rapid increase in the use of disposable medical masks, if a large number of masks are discarded and cannot be degraded in time, it will cause serious environmental pollution. In order to alleviate the pressure of environmental protection, researchers have developed natural cellulose and bio-based polymers that are environmentally friendly, sustainable, and biodegradable. Natural cellulose and its derivatives, such as viscose, Lyocell, Viloft, chitin, and synthetic polymers, such as polylactic acid (PLA), are gradually being used in the production of nonwoven fabrics. The researchers used chitosan nanofibers and lignin as raw materials, and polyoxyethylene (PEOx) as a solvent to produce degradable nanofiber membranes by electrospinning. After antistatic treatment, the film is placed between high-strength spunbond fabrics to make a protective mask that meets the standard.

In order to further adapt to environmental protection requirements, bio-based polymers such as bio-based polyethylene (PE), bio-based polyester, bio-based polypropylene, etc. have been widely used in Taiwan, China, Europe and the United States and other countries or regions to produce degradable environmentally friendly spunbond fabrics and meltblown cloth(PP Melt Blown Non Woven Company). Among them, the production of bio-based PE accounts for about 28% of the market share of bioplastics, which has been successfully applied in the field of nonwovens. Brazil Braskem company, using 100% renewable bio-based PE and PLA as the core layer, PE for the outer layer made FitsaEcoFabric fiber. This fiber combines the softness of PE and the high strength of PLA, and has degradability, and is expected to become the surface fabric of medical nonwoven masks.

3. Flexible raw materials

Masks with good airtightness can effectively block foreign objects from the outside, and at the same time effectively prevent the wearer from exhaling droplets and threatening others. Using elastic polymers as raw materials to produce elastic non-woven fabrics for export masks can improve the fit of the mask to the face, improve the tightness of the mask without using the bridge of the nose, thus avoiding the process of wearing masks by medical staff for a long time. Skin damage caused by the bridge of the nose. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) can also be used to produce elastic nonwoven fabrics. At present, elastic non-woven fabrics(Melt-Blown Non Woven On Sales) have been used in diapers, facial masks, mask ear straps and other products. If elastic non-woven fabrics can be used to prepare masks, it is not only expected to improve the tightness of the mask, but also can eliminate the bridge of the nose. The bridge of the nose can also be omitted.
